오헨리Through my 2 years of literature class in Cheongshim International school, I could do many analyzing and summarizings of literature, but in one class I could experience to imagine and write an imaginary ending of literature. O’Henry’s short story “The Caliph, Cupid, and the Clock” was a more mysterious and uneasy story to understand, but through this challenging project I could understand better of the literature and use my imagination for once in my life!

Prince Michael woke up in the dead of the night. The dim street lamp lights and moonbeam gave out a dreamy and yellowish glow, and everything was still, reticent, and at peace except one; the strident clanging of the luminous clock above the trees. It shattered the stillness of the night air, giving no choice but Prince Michael to rise from the bench.

Prince Michael sat there, feeling the coolness of the night with a big grin on his face, for he had been invited to the young man and his fiance; Marian’s wedding the night before.

The young man said, “Prince, ah prince here you are. I’ve been thinking all about you since that day you unmasked and revealed the truth of the clock. I’m here to thank you for your altruistic advice and lastly to ask you to officiate my wedding. Would you like to do so?”

Prince Michael answered. “I would never refuse such a pleasure, despite in the condition that the wedding should be held with no clocks.”

“Of course, of course… Just as you say.” replied the young man.

So, like this, the deal had been made, and Prince Michael begun his preparation for the wedding.

As the lights of the clockless wedding hall lit up, there came the wonderful bridegroom. Then, the bride walked down the aisle, as the young man waited for her. The scene was a charming spectacle as if time had stopped for the moment. The young man’s smile was radiant and unfocused, as though not for Prince Michael alone but for anyone and anything which wished to share pleasure with him.

“Good evening, and welcome to the ceremony that will unite William and Marian in marriage. We gather here today to celebrate their union, and to…” Michael started the officiant, continuing on to a more personal part of the speech, “Remember LOVE CONQUERS ALL. Remember that time may never spread you apart and limit your pleasures. Love is above time, and therefore love shouldn’t be limited in time. Time may pass and you should get older, but remember that love is the thing that united you and will unite you two from the start of time till the end of time. William and Marian, we are here to remember and rejoice with you and to recount with one another that it is love that guides us on our path, and to celebrate as you begin this journey together. It is in this spirit that you have come here to today to exchange these vows”

There stood the couple, in front of Michael; the Cupid, looking at each other lost in delight.
